Goodbye to Grandpa
[img_assist|nid=194|title=Grandpa|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=183|height=256]
Grandpa, so many memories, which ones do I share?
I used to spend a few weeks in the summers with grandma and grandpa as a preteen. I remember furiously pumping the well for the most amazing tasting water in the world drunk from a gigantic copper ladle. I remember sitting around on the porches reading books and soaking in the Hillsboro air with salamanders climbing up the walls next to me. I remember going out with a pail and flashlights to dig for night-crawlers so we could go fishing the next day on their tiny but perfect pond.
I have two favorite stories. I used to go to many summer tent revivals with grandpa and grandma. I was saved at one particular event at the age of 8.
Louie Needs a Home
The story as written by the woman who has been responsible for nursing Louie back to health. Pictures are at flicker here: http://www.flickr.com/pho...
One day, a poor little pup got lost somehow. He stumbled around with a gaping wound on his back leg, looking for someone to take care of him. He was hungry, wet from the rain, and his leg hurt. At last, he found a lady who talked to him, picked him up, and took him home. She fed him till his belly was full and gave him a warm place to sleep.
The next morning, he found himself at the vet’s office where more nice people were taking care of him. He went to sleep, and when he woke up the terrible hurt was gone, and so was his leg! Soon, he felt much better.
Child Abuse - Tragic and All Too Common
We are faced with so many terrible problems in the United States and around the world. Child abuse is an unforgivable and unimaginable act yet it happens more than we would like to think. In 2005 approximately 899,000 children were abused or neglected. That number does not take into account abuse not reported or confirmed. The vast majority of these children (62.8%) were neglected. We prefer to think when abuse happens that the perpetrators are strangers but they are more often than not the parents of the child (79.4%). The most surprising statistic to me is that women were the abuser 58% of the time, but women typically are with children more than men and are often the primary caregiver.
Toss the Video Games
2007 is the Chinese year of the boar, considered to be a very lucky year, but perhaps 2007 will be better remembered as the year of the recall. Week after week parents are warned on the news and on the Internet about lead paint being found in their children’s toys. Lists of affected toys grow longer and longer with every passing day. Fisher Price, Disney, Kids II, all trusted names by parents, recalling millions of toys due to violations in lead paint standards. Parents are scurrying around comparing their child’s toy’s lot numbers to lot numbers on long lists or simply throwing away hundreds of dollars of toys just to be safe. For those that do not know, lead paint is attributed with causing developmental delays, brain damage, multiple health problems, and behavioral problems.
