Outsourcing has a Negative Impact on India as Well

30 Days30 DaysSPOILERS Alert. I watched 30 Days Episode "Outsourcing" today. I recognize that I have a long way to go before I understand the full impact of Outsourcing. I have strong feelings regarding the loss of American jobs especially now that we are in an economic crisis with no end in sight. I wonder if there is something other than greed that motivates corporations such as IBM and Siemens to take their jobs around the world.

Putting that aside, I would like to touch on the impact of outsourcing on India. Until today I never would have considered a possible negative affect on India. This is why Morgan Spurlock is awesome in my opinion. He opens my normally closed and stubborn mind to new ideas. Please note, my opinion regarding corporate greed stands firm.

I recommend watching the episode (and all 30 Days episodes) for yourself. If you are not familiar with the program please go Here to read about it. I will list just a couple of the things I learned today from the reality TV show.

    Christmas in India?Christmas in India?
  • In order to get a call center job citizens of India must undergo "Americanization" classes in an attempt to fool us or make us feel more comfortable
  • They must also create an American name, again presumably to fool us or make us feel more comfortable
  • Hindus are celebrating Christmas because they can only take time off from work when Americans take time off from work
  • People in upper management live in squalid, I mean deplorable, I mean inhumane conditions

India of today was being compared to the America of the 1950's. Little by little they are losing their own culture to the demands of their new jobs.

During the filming of the program a major Indian actor died of natural causes. There was rioting in the streets. It was clear to both Chris (the US Citizen temporarily living in India) and Ravi (the Indian citizen that Chris was living with and a manager in a call center) that the rioting was not about the death of an actor. The sole target of the attacks (as shown by the program) was the American based corporations. Glass fronts of buildings were destroyed and employee shuttle buses were completely burned out. That's some serious anger focused on these American corporations.

On a final note, I feel it's also worth noting that if you lose your job in the US and decide to move to India to get it back you won't be qualified. You have to have "India experience".
