Random Halloween Babble

By mel - Posted on 26 October 2008

Halloween 2007Halloween 2007Well, it’s that time of year again. Goblins, ghouls, and Star Wars characters will be roaming the streets begging for candy. I’ll admit it right up front; I’m the Ebenezer Scrooge of Halloween. I just don’t like it. Didn’t like it as a kid either. Bah humbug to booos and vrrrmm vrrrmmms (light saber sound effects).

Now, that being said I will confess that I have enjoyed 2 Halloween’s in my life. One was my junior year in high school when I hung with a group of about 10 kids from my class. We went to Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers and numerous haunted houses that year. Both things are completely out of character for me. I detest horror films and being scared in general so haunted houses are out too. There was something about the camaraderie in that group of people though that gave me the strength to participate and yes, to even enjoy nearly fainting from fright.

We played a few Halloween jokes that year too. These days the things we did would be called vandalism and we’d be sent to juvie. It’s getting harder and harder to BE a kid. It’s not like we spray painted houses or busted car windows. We borrowed (sans permission and the returning part) about 30 pumpkins AFTER Halloween from our neighbors and surrounded a friend’s car with them so he would be late to school. Oooooo. Evil teenagers!

My second good Halloween was in 2002. My husband and I were a new couple and fun was the name of the game. We went to a Halloween party dressed like a bitch and a dickhead. I was a black puppy dog complete with whiskers, tail, and claw-filed black fake fingernails. Woof. Jamie had a baseball cap with a rubber head of a penis on top. It was hilarious. People were calling him “dickhead” all night. They were calling me “bitch” too but I was used to that, um, well anyway, we had a great time.

Speaking of costumes, people ask me what my kids are going as this year and I look at them kind of dumbfounded. Neither one is old enough to know about Halloween so why would I waste money on Halloween costumes?

So, will I be visited by the ghosts of Halloween past, present, and future? Will Michael Myers be among them? Or maybe Austin Powers? Will I have a change of heart, buy lots of candy and not hide it in a cabinet and say we ran out? Will I hang out the window of our apartment and throw the candy to eager children below? Will I pony up the 24 bucks and buy that adorable frog costume I’ve been secretly looking at for my son?

Not likely but one last confession. I did not enjoy Halloween as a child but I look forward to enjoying it with my children when they are old enough to “get it”. The day is coming.

God bless us everyone! *snicker*

OK...Mel reading some of your old blogs...this is by far one of my favorites. For obvious reasons...I am semi-mentioned in this one and it brings back GREAT memories of our Halloweens together : )

Yep, that was a great year and you are prominent in my memories. Thanks for reading some of my blog.

I'm all about the Halloween, but not about the horror. I'm with ya sister.

What do you MEAN what is the point of buying them costumes? I submit to you this thought: What is the point of having kids if you can't dress them up in ridiculous costumes and take many, many pictures?

I loved this blog. I myself loves Halloween and we are having a huge party here at the house. You will be forced into it when the kids get older. I love you girl!!!!
