It's All About Mel - Isn't It?

MelMelIt’s “About Me” time. I’ve been dreading it. Not because I don’t want you to know me because of course I do. I’ve been dreading it because part of the function of this blog is to help me to determine who I am.

There are some easy things so we’ll start there. I’m a mother and lucky enough to stay at home with our wonderful son and daughter. I’m a wife and a barely adequate housewife (I didn’t really volunteer for that one – Jamie says it’s part of the stay at home mom gig, blech).

I’m an indecisive procrastinator by nature. I finally achieved my BS (*snicker*) close to 20 years after my first college course and after 6 major changes. I’ve nailed things down and am very excited to start a graduate program in marriage and family therapy next summer. The family unit is in trouble in our culture and I want to play a part in helping correct the problems where I can.

Baby Mel: Because it's cute.Baby Mel: Because it's cute.I have a few hobbies as well. I am a reader, knitter, puzzler (word?), TV watcher, and generally a butt sitter. I used to read voraciously. The teens and early twenties were filled with books. Now though, I’m just the holder of a library card that occasionally picks up books then takes them back. That’s an improvement over being the buyer of books that sit on shelves collecting dust. I actually do read books but it’s generally just before bed and I’m so tired I barely complete half a page before I’m out.

As for knitting, I’m really just a buyer of needles, knitting books, and yarn – I love color – I would love to have a yarnshelf instead of a bookshelf. If they made a library for yarn I would totally borrow skeins of yarn just to look at the color for three weeks then return them untouched for new colors and textures.

I enjoy cryptograms, brick by bricks, and flower powers in Variety Puzzle mags but I rarely take the time for those pleasures either.

I always make time for TV.

I believe in a few things too that I will occasionally write about. For instance, I think our current prison system is insane and I’m disgusted that we continue to execute people in a system that so frequently convicts innocent people.

I’m also concerned about the future of children in a society where the government places such a low priority on education. Additionally I’m concerned about the impact of the almost weekly escalation of violence in TV, movies, and video games on child development.

Very SeriousVery SeriousYou’ll see me bitch about corporate bullshit from time to time as well. I detest the loss of the personal touch in our society. Everything is “just business” these days and I find it sad and depressing.

So that’s me in 500 words or less.
